Driving to London's airports in a hire car
A hire car makes an airport run simple: door to terminal, luggage in the boot, no connections to make. Whether you're dropping someone off, collecting a visitor or driving yourself to a flight, a little planning makes the day easier.
London's airports
- Heathrow, to the west of London. See car hire for Heathrow.
- Gatwick, to the south.
- Stansted, to the north-east.
- Luton, to the north.
- London City, in East London, near Canary Wharf.
Timing your drive
London traffic varies a great deal by time of day. Leave more time than a route planner suggests, especially on weekday mornings and Friday afternoons, and check for roadworks or closures before you set off.
Dropping off and picking up
Several London airports charge for dropping off at the terminal forecourt, and most have short-stay car parks for collecting passengers. Rules and charges differ by airport and change from time to time, so check the airport's own website before you travel.
Charges on the way
Your route to the airport may take you through charging zones. If you drive through central London during charging hours, the Congestion Charge applies. Check the ULEZ rules too.
Choosing a car for the airport
- A saloon suits one or two passengers with luggage, with a separate boot to keep bags out of sight. See saloon hire.
- An SUV suits families and groups with more luggage. See SUV hire.
Collection and return
Hires start and end at our depot in Hainault, East London, or at an address agreed with us. Delivery and collection to your address is available at extra cost, which can save a trip across London before or after a flight. See delivery and collection.
If you need something different, such as a return at a different place, talk to us before you book.
If your flight changes
If a delay or a change of plan means you need the car longer, request an extension through your account as early as you can. See changes and extensions.
