Driving licence and age requirements

A clean licence and a minimum age of 25. If your circumstances are different, talk to us.

To hire a R3ntal Central car, you'll need a clean licence and to be at least 25. Hires outside these rules may be possible case by case: some cars can be hired by younger drivers, depending on the vehicle. If that's you, call us to discuss before you book.

Your licence

You'll need a full photocard driving licence that's clean and valid for the whole of your hire. When you book, you upload a photo of it and enter its number and expiry date. Your licence stays on your profile, so a returning hire is quicker.

Your DVLA check code

A DVLA check code lets us check your licence details and any endorsements with the DVLA. You can get one free on GOV.UK. A code lasts 21 days, so get it close to your booking and add it to your account.

When your licence is checked

After you've paid your deposits, our team checks your licence. Once it's approved, we confirm your booking and let you know. If something isn't right, we'll keep your booking on hold and get in touch to sort it out with you.

Age

  • 25 and over: you can hire with a clean licence, and insurance is included.
  • Under 25: some cars can be hired by younger drivers, depending on the vehicle. A young driver surcharge applies and is shown in your price once you enter the driver's age. Call us to discuss.

Your age also affects the security deposit: £500 for drivers aged 23 and over, and £1,000 for drivers under 23. Performance and luxury cars carry a £1,000 deposit whatever the driver's age. See deposits.

Additional drivers

Anyone else who will drive the car needs to meet the same licence and age requirements and must be added to the booking before they drive. Ask us and we'll add them.

Licences from outside the UK

If your licence wasn't issued in the UK, call us before you book so we can tell you what we'll need.

  • A clean, full photocard licence, valid for your whole hire.
  • Your DVLA check code, ideally taken in the 21 days before your hire.
  • Every driver aged 25 or over, or a conversation with us first.
  • Every additional driver added to the booking.
