Documents you'll need to hire a car

What we ask for, when, and where it's kept.

Most of the paperwork for a R3ntal Central hire is done online before you collect, so the day itself is quick. Here's what we ask for and when.

When you book

  • Your account details: name, email, phone, address and date of birth.
  • Your driving licence: a photo of it, plus its number and expiry date.
  • Your DVLA check code: so we can check your licence details and any endorsements. Get one free on GOV.UK. A code lasts 21 days.

Before you pay

  • Your hire agreement. It's created for your booking and signed on screen. You can read every term before you sign, and a copy is kept in your account.

During your hire

Your customer account may ask for further documents, such as bank statements, depending on your booking. If it does, you can upload them there.

At collection

  • Bring your driving licence.
  • Confirm the inspection. The car is inspected with you and photographed before you drive away.

At return

  • Confirm the return inspection. The car is inspected and photographed again. A hire can't be closed without both inspections.

Where everything is kept

Your customer account holds your bookings, charges, payments and documents. Your licence and documents stay on your profile, so a returning hire is quicker. See your customer account.

Keeping your information safe

We collect only what we need to run your hire and check your licence. See our privacy policy for how we use and protect your information.

Common questions about documents

My licence is due to expire during my hire. Your licence must be valid for the whole of your hire. If it will expire before your return date, renew it first or call us before you book.

My address has changed. Update your details in your account so they match your licence, and call us if your licence still shows your old address.

My DVLA check code has expired. Codes last 21 days. Get a new one free on GOV.UK and add it to your booking.

I'm booking for someone else. The main driver needs their own account, licence and DVLA check code. If you're arranging hires for a company, see business car hire.

  • A clean, full photocard driving licence, valid for the whole hire.
  • A DVLA check code from the 21 days before your hire.
